An English major requires 49 credit hours, including 6 hours of English Composition, 15 hours of sophomore-level coursework, and 28 hours of advanced English classes. Students can choose from four tracks: Literature, Writing, Pre-Secondary English Education, or the Legal Studies 3+3 program. Those aiming for professional careers, graduate studies, or non-teaching paths should select either Literature or Writing after consulting their advisors. Aspiring teachers should opt for Pre-Secondary English Education (contact the Department of Educational Studies for licensure details at UTM). The Legal Studies 3+3 track provides an accelerated path to law school at UT Knoxville. All majors should meet with their advisors each semester for course selection guidance. Typically, students should focus on completing general education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree and at least one sophomore literature survey sequence during their first two years.
