The Modern Languages and Classics Department faculty are dedicated to outstanding teaching, research, and community engagement, aligning with the University of Maine's Land and Sea Grant objectives. Our primary focus is delivering exceptional education to the College, University, and Maine residents. We continuously enhance our professional expertise and curriculum while supporting local communities and language educators statewide. As committed scholars, we engage in research that advances teaching methods, explores language-related cultural aspects, and generates new academic insights. Our department leads the University's diversity education and global communication initiatives, specializing in world languages and cultural studies. Graduate programs include French and Spanish, with undergraduate majors covering French, Spanish, Romance Languages, and International Affairs. Students can pursue minors in French, Spanish, Professional Languages, and Classical Studies, with intermediate-level courses available in Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and other languages. The department also provides instruction in German, Hebrew, and Latin. Beyond training most of Maine's language educators, we serve as a crucial resource for international achievement across all University of Maine degree programs, both in humanities and professional fields.
To earn a Spanish, French, or German certificate, students must complete at least nine credits in the chosen language, with a minimum of three credits at advanced levels (300 or above).
