As a student in the German studies program, you'll benefit from three years of language training along with diverse introductory and advanced courses covering literature and cultural studies. Our curriculum caters to students with varied academic interests, equipping graduates for professional paths in commerce, teaching, public service, legal fields, healthcare, journalism, interpretation, and advanced studies in German. The department provides numerous engaging opportunities to explore German language and traditions, ranging from foundational language courses to advanced examinations of sophisticated literary works, political issues, and cultural themes led by globally recognized, decorated faculty members.
The Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies provides undergraduate degree options including a B.A. in German language and literature, as well as a B.A. in Russian and East European Studies. For graduate-level studies in German language and literature, refer to the Comparative Literature Program. Both undergraduate programs establish fundamental language skills through introductory courses while emphasizing contemporary language use in advanced classes. Each program's coursework explores diverse literary works, artistic expressions, and cultural developments within worldwide perspectives. Exceptional German majors may participate in year-long exchanges at one of UC's three affiliated Berlin universities through the Education Abroad program, with semester options also available. Munich University additionally provides a specialized Engineering for Sustainability program. Instruction varies between German and English depending on the program. Since 2015, the University of California has partnered with CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange), facilitating summer programs, semester exchanges, and full academic year opportunities at St. Petersburg State University.
You are considered a freshman applicant if you have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university.
English Language Proficiency
The minimum accepted score for admission consideration for the TOEFL is 80 or better on the Internet-based test and 550 or better on the paper-based test.
The minimum accepted score for the IELTS is 6.5 or better band score (academic modules).
