Forests span approximately a third of our planet's surface and close to 50% of Wisconsin's landscape. These vital ecosystems offer varied wildlife habitats, timber resources, purified water, climate-regulating carbon sequestration, recreational spaces, scenic beauty, and cultural significance. Professionals in forestry conduct most of their conservation and management work in the field, addressing challenges posed by pests, diseases, wildfires, habitat fragmentation, deforestation, and environmental shifts, while utilizing technological tools for forest mapping and assessment.
Forest science students acquire diverse professional competencies through a balanced approach of academic study, lab work, and hands-on field experiences. Their education includes regular forest excursions and participation in both expert-led and peer-driven training sessions and networking opportunities. The program allows students to tailor their education by choosing from numerous elective courses.
The department boasts top-tier instructional spaces, research laboratories, and computer resources. With intentionally small class sizes, undergraduates benefit from personalized instruction. Every student receives guidance from a faculty mentor, and numerous opportunities exist to collaborate with professors on research initiatives.
Applicant must have high school record should demonstrate both rigor and breadth in the types of course work you pursue. A competitive academic record should show some of the most challenging advanced-level work offered at or through your school in as many areas as possible, while maintaining a strong GPA. The following chart shows the number of years that most admitted students studied in each subject area; English 4 years, Math 4 years, Social Studies 3-4 years, Science 3-4 years, Single Foreign Language 3-4 years and Additional Academic/Fine Arts 2 years. Applicant must have ACT score of 30 and overall SAT score of 1395.
