The University of Wisconsin–Madison's Department of African American Studies provides students with a chance to explore Black history, culture, and society through interdisciplinary approaches that reimagine African American life. Students are encouraged to analyze historically and currently significant topics related to the African American experience. The department provides both an undergraduate major and certificate option. For graduate studies, the MA program features tailored curricula designed for individual students, with many participating in "Bridge" initiatives that facilitate direct entry into PhD programs in English and History. Both faculty and students engage in diverse initiatives, such as hip-hop outreach for at-risk youth, community theater productions, educational courses for underserved adults, and the Public History Project.
