The Department of African Cultural Studies is dedicated to exploring and educating about Africa's diverse languages and cultural expressions, as well as those of African communities worldwide. Our experts focus on various fields including literary arts, musical traditions, cinematic studies, linguistic applications, theatrical arts, diaspora research, and digital media. The undergraduate curriculum focuses on cultivating critical thinking, language proficiency, and research techniques that empower students to navigate diverse regions, languages, cultural practices, academic approaches, and interdisciplinary studies. Graduates with an African Cultural Studies degree gain versatile skills for international career opportunities.

Undergraduate students choose from six language optionsArabic, Hausa, Swahili, Wolof, Yoruba, or Zuluand integrate this linguistic study with engaging courses in humanities, literary analysis, and cultural identity studies. Our department provides an extensive selection of subjects, covering traditional African storytelling and performance arts, modern film and musical trends, speculative African futures, identity and gender studies, as well as digital culture and communication research.

Qualification Requirements

Applicant must have high school record should demonstrate both rigor and breadth in the types of course work you pursue. A competitive academic record should show some of the most challenging advanced-level work offered at or through your school in as many areas as possible, while maintaining a strong GPA. The following chart shows the number of years that most admitted students studied in each subject area; English 4 years, Math 4 years, Social Studies 3-4 years, Science 3-4 years, Single Foreign Language 3-4 years and Additional Academic/Fine Arts 2 years. Applicant must have ACT score of 30 and overall SAT score of 1395.
