The African American Studies Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison provides students with interdisciplinary approaches to explore Black history, culture, and society while reimagining African American experiences. Students are encouraged to analyze historically and currently significant topics related to African American life through critical inquiry. The department features both an undergraduate major and certificate program. Its Master's program tailors coursework to individual student needs, with many participants transitioning into PhD programs in English and History through Bridge initiatives. Faculty and students engage in diverse initiatives, from hip-hop outreach for at-risk youth to community theater, adult education courses, and the Public History Project. The department maintains strong collaborations with various disciplines, including ethnic studies, Gender and Women's Studies, African Cultural Studies, English, History, Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies, and the School of Education. As a dynamic academic community that embraces diversity within unity, we invite all who seek profound insights into race and ethnicity in America and globally.
