Students pursuing undergraduate degrees at the Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work gain a comprehensive liberal arts education focused on social and behavioral sciences, equipping them to tackle human service challenges and engage with social welfare issues. Social welfare majors develop expertise in historical social work foundations, societal systems, and policy frameworks while acquiring tools to promote justice across social, racial, economic, and environmental spheres. Through interdisciplinary coursework, students examine welfare systems within wider socioeconomic and political frameworks. This major provides both foundational knowledge of contemporary social issues and preparation for advanced study or careers in human services.

The field of social work distinguishes itself through its specialized knowledge base, ethical principles, and practical skills for understanding human interactions across various levels—from individuals and families to organizations and communities. Coursework blends theoretical analysis of social issues with practical social work methodologies. The program addresses diverse topics including elder care, child and family services, economic inequality, mental health, disabilities, addiction, cultural diversity, justice systems, systemic oppression, and vulnerable populations.
