Mathematics explores patterns and concepts through scientific and artistic lenses, while statistics focuses on gathering, interpreting, and drawing conclusions from data. Nearly every field relies on mathematical or statistical reasoning to some degree. These disciplines form a core component of liberal arts education and underpin numerous academic pursuits. At UW-La Crosse, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics fulfills multiple roles by supporting diverse learners—we foster critical thinking in liberal arts students, establish strong foundations for scientific studies, equip professional program participants with essential skills, and develop future mathematicians and statisticians. These subjects can be pursued independently or combined with biology, physical sciences, engineering, and social sciences.
Graduates with mathematics or statistics degrees embark on varied career paths. Our math education alumni help address the national demand for skilled math instructors, while statistics and applied math graduates often become industry analysts, statisticians, or actuaries—some advance to professional programs in law, healthcare, or business. Our program has successfully prepared students for graduate studies in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, engineering, and computer science.
Our department faculty are dedicated teacher-scholars who actively research algebra, analysis, topology, geometry, statistics, applied mathematics, numerical analysis, education, combinatorics, and graph theory. Their work appears in respected journals, and many have secured significant grants. We incorporate technology into both instruction and research, with numerous undergraduates contributing to projects that lead to publications and national conference presentations.
