The mathematics department provides undergraduate programs culminating in a Bachelor of Arts degree with a mathematics major. These degree programs feature focused tracks in applied mathematics, discrete mathematics/operations research, statistics, or a broad mathematics curriculum. The Bachelor of Arts program delivers a classic liberal arts education, integrating coursework across arts, humanities, languages, and social and natural sciences. Prospective mathematics majors should meet with a Mathematics and Statistics Department advisor to develop a tailored academic plan in mathematics or statistics.
Graduates will develop the following competencies:
apply problem-solving and modeling skills by bridging theoretical concepts with practical applications. This involves converting real-world challenges into mathematical frameworks, employing mathematical/statistical methods to derive solutions, and interpreting results in practical contexts.
understand mathematical proof techniques and develop the ability to construct precise logical arguments.
utilize computational tools effectively for problem-solving and exploring mathematical hypotheses.
