The University of Washington offers globally recognized, structured language and degree programs in South Asian studies, carefully designed to accommodate a wide range of student needs. These comprehensive programs develop students' proficiency across all key language skills - oral communication, reading, writing, listening, translation, and grammatical understanding - catering to diverse academic and professional objectives.
Complete instructional sequences, featuring three years of foundational training plus specialized courses, are offered for Hindi and Sanskrit at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Urdu instruction spans three years, while Bangla (Bengali) covers two years. The graduate curriculum also includes limited offerings in Apabhramsa, Avadhi, Braj, Pali, and Prakrit (including Gandhari). Through UW's involvement in national and international partnerships, students can access training in additional South Asian languages such as Malayalam, Panjabi, and Tibetan via various consortium programs.
