The Master of Arts program in Germanics aims to provide students with comprehensive knowledge across German Studies, covering areas like literary history, cultural studies, intellectual traditions, and teaching methods. Those awarded teaching assistantships must meet both Graduate School and departmental criteria. New teaching assistants must take German 518/576 in the fall quarter and attend the orientation program.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants to the MA program in Germanics should have fulfilled requirements equivalent to those for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Germanics at the University of Washington. These requirements include advanced proficiency in the German language and knowledge of the modern periods of German literature and civilization.

English Proficiency:

The Graduate School is temporarily accepting official test scores for both the Duolingo English Test and the TOEFL ITP Plus For China to assist international students with remote testing options. This policy is currently in effect through the autumn 2021 admission cycle (i.e., students enrolling in autumn 2021).
