Penn State's African American Literature and Language program has earned recognition from US News and World Report as one of the top ten programs at public universities nationwide. Our distinguished faculty of researchers, literary critics, and poets has received prestigious honors including three American Book Awards, the Josephine Miles Award, and the Darwin Turner Award. Faculty members hold leadership positions in prominent organizations like the African American Literature and Culture Society, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the Conference on College Composition and Communication. Their scholarly works have been published by leading university presses such as Cambridge, Massachusetts, Illinois, North Carolina, Alabama, Indiana, Minnesota, Southern Illinois, Wayne State, Syracuse, as well as Heinemann and Routledge. Faculty publications regularly appear in respected journals including Callaloo, MELUS, Phylon, African American Review, The Massachusetts Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, College English, College Language Association Journal, Diacritics, Western Journal of Black Studies, Black World, The World & I, Mark Twain Journal, and American Book Review.
