The Graduate Certificate in Literature and Composition equips students with the skills to teach college-level literature and writing courses. The program covers specialized literary fields (American, British, World) alongside composition theory.
Designed primarily for high school educators, this certificate fulfills the 18 graduate credits in English Literature and Composition required for Dual Enrollment program certification, as outlined by Northern Virginia Community College. The curriculum includes six credits in writing instruction methods and twelve credits spanning various literary eras. Beyond this core audience, the certificate—combining elements from our Literature and Writing Instruction concentrations—benefits students pursuing high school or community college teaching careers, as well as those preparing for PhD applications. Students can earn this credential concurrently with their Master's degree.
Participants will develop expertise in examining literary texts through historical, structural, and critical lenses while learning to integrate writing effectively into classroom instruction. Graduates will emerge capable of creating college-level literature and composition course materials and assessments.
