The PhD degree is granted after showcasing comprehensive expertise in Scandinavian Studies and the capacity to produce innovative research in the discipline. After being accepted into the program, candidates must complete a minimum of three quarters enrolled in approved coursework and seminars. Following this, they focus on preparing for comprehensive examinations. Once these qualifying exams are passed and all other PhD prerequisites are met, the student advances to candidacy. The degree is conferred upon successful completion and defense of the dissertation. Applicants pursuing a PhD in Scandinavian Studies must already hold an MA degree to be considered for admission. The MA coursework serves as a foundational component of the PhD requirements, and students transferring from other universities should review the University of Washington's Scandinavian Studies MA program guidelines.
