Physics explores how matter, space, time, and fields interact. Through advanced experimentation and mathematical methods, physicists collect precise data about phenomena ranging from cosmic scales to subatomic particles, developing theories to explain universal behavior. The University of Washington's Physics Department offers comprehensive education, from introductory courses to doctoral programs, while fostering undergraduate research opportunities—currently engaging over 180 students in departmental research projects.
Applicants to the doctoral program are expected to have a strong undergraduate preparation in physics, including courses in electromagnetism, classical and quantum mechanics, statistical physics, optics, and mathematical methods of physics.
