Our medicinal chemistry research explores key aspects of drug metabolism, pharmaceutical design, and disease pathology. Essentially, we investigate how medications and toxic substances interact with biological targets, detoxification systems, and transport mechanisms, while also examining the chemical foundations of cardiovascular, degenerative, developmental, and infectious disorders.

With 11 faculty members—including 8 leading active research laboratories—we address critical health challenges at the intersection of chemistry and biology. Our department has gained global recognition for studying xenobiotic metabolism mechanisms, particularly involving cytochrome P450s (CYPs) and related detoxification enzymes. Since CYPs process most clinical drugs, their malfunction can lead to dangerous drug interactions, inflammatory conditions, cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and neurodevelopmental impairments. In recent years, our work has expanded into biochemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, biophysics, and chemical biology. Some researchers focus on groundbreaking biologic therapies like antibodies and peptides, while others investigate virology to enhance vaccines and treatments for HIV/AIDS, influenza, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Additionally, we pioneer advanced analytical methods, including mass spectrometry techniques for rapid, high-sensitivity analysis of lipids, metabolites, and glycoproteins.
