A Ph.D. is obtained by conducting original research under the guidance of faculty members. A limited number of structured courses provide comprehensive foundational knowledge in the selected discipline, along with exposure to broader chemical science topics. This degree equips graduates for careers in industrial labs, research institutions, government organizations, or academic roles involving teaching, research, and administration. Typically, students finish all Ph.D. requirements within approximately five years. The program mandates completion of specific coursework and successful performance in written and oral exams focused on the student's specialization area. No preliminary or qualifying examinations are required for admission.
A bachelor's degree in the natural sciences or engineering from a regionally accredited college or university, or its equivalent foreign institution. The minimum required grade point average is 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for the last 60 semester or the last 90 quarter credits. Students whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency. GRE not accepted.
English Proficiency:
The Graduate School is temporarily accepting official test scores for both the Duolingo English Test and the TOEFL ITP Plus For China to assist international students with remote testing options. This policy is currently in effect through the autumn 2021 admission cycle (i.e., students enrolling in autumn 2021).
TOEFL iBT - Minimum Required Score (ELP Required): 80; Recommended Score (ELP Satisfied): 92 or higher
TOEFL pBT - Minimum Required Score: 500
Duolingo: Minimum Required Score (ELP Required): 105; Recommended Score (ELP Satisfied): 120 or higher
IELTS: Minimum Required Score 6.5
