The expansion of atmospheric science research accelerated significantly in the late 1940s, driven by both practical needs and emerging possibilities in weather prediction. Current studies focus on enhancing forecast accuracy over longer periods while improving regional and short-term prediction details. Beyond forecasting, the field now tackles diverse, critically important challenges, such as potential climate shifts from rising CO2 and greenhouse gas levels, and employing remote-sensing technologies to better observe and interpret weather patterns and climate trends.

Atmospheric science graduate programs attract students with diverse academic foundations, including physics, chemistry, engineering, geophysical sciences, and applied mathematics. This variety proves advantageous as each discipline contributes uniquely to specialized areas within atmospheric research. Regardless of their background, successful atmospheric science students share strong foundations in physics and applied mathematics, coupled with curiosity about intricate natural systems. The Department of Atmospheric Sciences integrates research projects with graduate coursework, enabling well-qualified students to commence research activities early in their academic journey.
