Students pursuing the general concentration have flexibility to explore various aspects of Asia rather than focusing on one specific country or region. They can tailor their elective courses to achieve different objectives, such as gaining comprehensive knowledge about Asia or conducting specialized research on particular themes (like politics, social transformation, or economic growth) across multiple Asian cultures. The program requires two years of Asian language study, with students free to choose any Asian language. Native speakers of an Asian language can meet this requirement by showing college-level proficiency equivalent to two years of study. This open major can be declared at any time. The South Asia region encompasses India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Afghanistan, and Tibet. Participants should develop skills in a South Asian language (with regular course offerings in Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, and Sanskrit at all levels) while following a curriculum that combines focused discipline-based work with interdisciplinary approaches. Through the program's affiliation with the American Institute of Indian Studies, students can access language immersion programs in India. Additional organizations offer comparable study abroad options in other regional countries.
