The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures provides two Master's programs: one focused on Russian language and literature, and another specializing in Contemporary Russian Studies (CRS). For doctoral studies, it offers a PhD in Slavic languages and literatures with an emphasis on Russian literature and culture. While language and literature students mainly attend courses within the Slavic department, CRS students integrate Slavic studies with classes from History, Political Science, Sociology, and related fields. (Note: No PhD program exists for CRS, neither at Virginia nor at any other U.S. institution.)
The graduate program in Slavic Languages and Literatures features a diverse faculty and comprehensive curriculum. Its primary goal is to equip students with cultural knowledge, analytical abilities, and methodological expertise related to Russia and Eastern Europe. These programs prepare graduates for academic careers, public service roles, and professional opportunities in sectors like business and media. Alumni of the doctoral program currently hold or have held faculty positions at institutions including the University of Arizona, Yale University, Bucknell University, Bates College, the University of Kentucky, William & Mary, Virginia Tech, and Brigham Young University.
