To earn the degree, students must complete 72 credits, with at least 54 credits coming from graded coursework. This includes taking either PLAD 7090 (Research Methods in Political Science) or PLPT 5010 (The Nature of Political Inquiry), along with specific courses for one major and one minor field. For American Politics majors, required courses are PLAP 7000 (American Political Development), PLAP 7010 (American Politics Institutions), and PLAP 7110 (American Political Behavior), while minors must complete two of these three. Political Theory minors need to take PLPT 7000 (Introduction to Political Theory) plus two writing-intensive courses selected from PLPT 5010 (Foundations of Political Inquiry) and other 7000- or 8000-level PLPT classes. Political Methodology minors must complete PLAD 7100 (Political Research with Quantitative Methods), PLAD 8310 (Advanced Quantitative Applications in Political Science: Linear Models), PLAD 8320 (Advanced Topics in Multivariate Analysis: Maximum Likelihood), and PLCP 5550 (Causal Inference).
Language proficiency can be demonstrated by passing a University-administered test, an oral exam evaluated by a department-approved examiner, or earning at least a B in a 2020-level language course at the University. International students may use their native language if it's not English. Alternatively, non-political theory students can fulfill this requirement by completing PLAD 7100 (Political Research with Quantitative Methods) to show quantitative proficiency.
