The University of Virginia's Music Department provides diverse musical education opportunities for all students. Learners can engage with jazz, African musical traditions, European classical compositions, electronic music, hip-hop, popular music styles, and various global folk traditions. Our expanding curriculum and ensemble offerings maintain our position among the nation's premier music programs. Students can participate through performance groups, academic coursework, or a combination of both, fully embracing musical experiences. Courses accommodate all skill levels, from novices to advanced musicians, allowing everyone to deepen their musical comprehension. Our liberal arts approach integrates critical analysis (encompassing cultural studies, aesthetics, music history, and ethnomusicology), music theory, composition, and performance across multiple genres. Exceptionally talented applicants may optionally submit a Music Portfolio via the Common Application, which faculty review for students intending serious musical study. These evaluations contribute to the comprehensive admissions assessment process.
