The Japanese studies program equips students with a unique blend of analytical, interpersonal, and cross-cultural skills, fostering globally aware individuals who can navigate between languages and cultures with sensitivity. The curriculum includes language instruction from introductory to advanced levels, enhancing reading, writing, listening, and speaking proficiency while enabling students to pursue specialized interests. This foundation prepares them for independent research and continued learning beyond formal education. Through language immersion, students gain insights into modern Japanese societal norms and cultural perspectives. Complementary courses in Japanese literature and culture, taught in English, broaden students' historical and thematic understanding by exposing them to over a thousand years of literary tradition, including some of the world's most celebrated works. These studies also refine students' ability to recognize how translation and analysis of these texts are influenced by historical, cultural, social, and linguistic variations.
