The University of Virginia's Department of East Asian Languages, Literatures and Cultures boasts a world-renowned faculty specializing in all historical eras of the region, along with comprehensive language programs in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean ranging from beginner to advanced levels. Beyond language studies, we provide diverse English-taught electives covering East Asian literature and culture, including topics like ancient poetry, foundational myths, crime fiction, and modern film. Students can pursue a B.A. in either Chinese Language and Literatures or Japanese Language and Literature. Collaborating with the East Asia Center, we work alongside professors from Anthropology, Architecture, Art, History, Economics, Politics, and Religious Studies to offer minor, bachelor's, and master's degree programs in East Asian Studies.
