Similar to all World Languages & Literatures (WLL) majors, students pursuing Chinese Language & Literature typically start with CAS XL 100 Leaving Home: Explorations in World Literature. This collaborative course features guest lectures by WLL faculty and introduces students to the vast array of global literary traditions. Early initiation into Chinese language studies is encouraged, with a requirement to complete at least three language courses beyond the intermediate level (CAS LC 212). The program also offers introductory and advanced Classical Chinese courses. Early in their studies, students can take CAS LC 250 Masterpieces of Chinese Literature, which covers key texts in English translation. Four additional courses in Chinese language, literature, or culture allow for deeper specialization, while one WLL elective from outside Chinese studies fosters cross-cultural comparison. Students may replace one Chinese-focused course with an additional elective if they wish to explore other WLL offerings.

In their final year, majors join all WLL students in the capstone seminar CAS XL 479. Here, they collaborate with faculty mentors on Chinese-language research projects. The seminar offers structured guidance while faculty mentors help refine advanced language skills relevant to each student's focus. Presentations enhance oral communication and project explanation abilities. Potential projects range from literary or film analyses to translations, video essays, or digital humanities initiatives. Outstanding capstone projects may evolve into honors thesis work.
