The Italian language, literature, and cultures program, culminating in a B.A. degree, equips students with advanced language proficiency and comprehensive understanding of Italian literary and cultural traditions. Foundational courses develop core language abilities (reading, writing, and speaking) while exposing students to Italy's cultural heritage and artistic expressions. Advanced coursework deepens students' understanding of socio-cultural contexts along with literary and film history, critical analysis, and theoretical frameworks.
Our multidisciplinary curriculum explores Italy's cultural evolution from medieval times through the Renaissance to contemporary periods. All students with over one year of high school Italian must complete a placement exam administered just before each semester's registration. This policy applies universally, regardless of academic standing or prior coursework. Potential majors are encouraged to meet with the Italian program advisor early, especially those with minimal or no Italian background, to ensure timely completion of all prerequisites and degree requirements within the standard four-year timeframe.
