The Deafblind program equips educators to support children and youth with dual hearing and vision challenges. When paired with an additional special education certification (such as Visual Impairments, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Severe Disabilities, Mild/Moderate Disabilities, or Early Childhood Special Education), graduates qualify for Utah's Deafblindness endorsement. These specialized educators can work as traveling deafblind consultants or classroom instructors serving diverse students, including those with deafblindness, in either school districts or specialized sensory disability institutions. While deafblind students represent a highly diverse group, most experience additional disabilities beyond their sensory impairments - this program specifically trains teachers to address these complex, individualized needs. Alongside deafblind-focused coursework, participants study Visual Impairments, Deaf and Hard of Hearing education, Severe Disabilities, and American Sign Language.
