The composition program maintains an average enrollment of 25 students (10 graduate and 15 undergraduate), enabling faculty to deliver personalized guidance while cultivating an inspiring atmosphere for nurturing students' musical creativity and technical writing skills. Annually, the department organizes four dedicated student composer concerts, professional recording sessions featuring student pieces performed by local musicians, as well as recitals and masterclasses conducted by visiting artists and ensembles. Every semester, the Maurice Abravanel Visiting Distinguished Composer Series hosts an acclaimed composer for an immersive three-day residency, facilitating direct student interaction with luminaries like John Adams, Milton Babbitt, John Corigliano, Mario Davidovsky, Lou Harrison, Jonathan Harvey, Tristan Murail, and Shulamit Ran in casual settings. Graduates frequently advance to elite graduate programs or secure faculty positions at universities across the U.S. and internationally.
