Conflicts arise both internally and in our interactions with others—whether with friends, family, or our broader communities, both near and far. To develop the ability to identify and address conflicts constructively, explore the Peace & Conflict Studies program at the University of Utah. This interdisciplinary program, offered through partnerships between the College of Humanities, Department of Communication, and College of Social and Behavioral Science, equips students with the knowledge, skills, and ethical foundation to become effective peacemakers. Students can focus on one of three thematic areas: Conflict Resolution, Social Justice, or Global Perspectives. Core coursework covers subjects such as negotiation strategies, poverty and inequality, international relations and human rights, the intersection of religion and politics, and the economic dimensions of race and gender. The program culminates with a capstone course, seminar, and mandatory internship. Throughout their studies, students enhance their communication abilities, social consciousness, and analytical thinking—skills that open doors to diverse career paths.
Career Paths
Program graduates are well-prepared for roles such as victim advocates, journalists, public relations professionals, and specialists in human resources or conflict resolution. With advanced graduate education, career options expand to include counseling, mediation, legal practice, human rights advocacy, or academia.
