The French Teaching major is designed for students passionate about French language and culture who aspire to become educators. This program consists of 33 credit hours covering French Literature and Culture, along with grammar and teaching methodology courses.
Aspiring French Teaching majors must achieve significant language proficiency (at least Advanced Low for World Language or Advanced Mid for French Dual Language Immersion). The Department conducts a French Proficiency Assessment in the student's final semester.
To obtain a Utah teaching license, students must gain admission to the Secondary Education Licensure Program through the College of Education, with approval from the Department's teaching major advisor.
Career Pathways
Graduates will qualify for educational roles including Dual Language Immersion programs (K-9) or French instruction in World Language programs (middle and high school). Public school teaching in Utah requires licensure, available through the Urban Institute of Teacher Education. Advanced graduate coursework can lead to higher education positions as instructors, lecturers, or professors.
