The University of Tulsa's School of Music holds accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). NASM recognizes several degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Music in Performance, and Bachelor of Music in Composition. Music faculty provide instruction for both the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in music and the Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.) with instrumental or vocal specializations. The School of Music aims to deliver professional musical training aligned with a university's broad educational goals while adapting to evolving global and technological contexts. It seeks to broaden the University's academic offerings through diverse courses and ensemble opportunities open to all students, while also contributing to campus and community culture through high-quality musical events.
Graduates of the music program will:
Master technical abilities needed for artistic performance in their primary instrument or voice. This includes studying repertoire, sight-reading, developing leadership through rehearsal and conducting skills, achieving keyboard proficiency, and gaining collaborative experience through various ensemble participation. Grasp compositional techniques, conceptualize musical structures, and articulate informed musical evaluations. Show competency in recognizing and working with rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic elements. (Musicianship Skills, Theory, Ear Training and Analysis)
Produce and present creative works, whether original compositions or adaptations, with opportunities in jazz studies and ensemble-based harmonization. (Composition/Improvisation)
Study musical literature and stylistic developments from ancient Greek traditions to modern works, incorporating global music perspectives. (History and Repertory)
Integrate musical knowledge and skills gained throughout their undergraduate journey, demonstrated through recitals and teaching experiences. (Synthesis)
