The vocal department offers student singers a combination of private lessons and classroom learning, along with abundant performance chances. Active professional performers provide one-on-one coaching for majors, minors, and non-majors when space permits. Coursework includes vocal technique, pronunciation skills, and song literature studies. Beyond solo performances, students gain comprehensive training through the Music School's choir groups and opera initiatives. Collaborative opportunities exist with the Theater and Dance School and MCTCommunity Theater for musical theater productions. Our music education alumni rapidly secure positions in elementary and secondary schools statewide. Vocal performance graduates achieve professional success, recently performing with organizations like Opera San Jose, Intermountain Opera, and Portland Opera. Musical theater and vocal students have appeared at venues including Arizona Broadway Theater, Fort Peck Summer Theater, and in national productions like Mamma Mia and The Wizard of Oz.
