Loyola's PhD program stands as a leading center for advanced studies in continental philosophy, political and social philosophy, and philosophical history. The program is particularly distinguished for its expertise in feminist theory, ethics and value studies, critical race philosophy, and bioethics. Emphasizing philosophical diversity, our faculty draw from multiple traditions and methods, ensuring students encounter both analytic and continental perspectives throughout their studies. This provides doctoral candidates with a comprehensive education and numerous specialized research opportunities. Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited university, with substantial philosophy training - typically an undergraduate major - including studies in ancient and early modern philosophy, metaphysics, epistemology, logic, ethics, and socio-political philosophy.
The Social-Political Philosophy curriculum encompasses diverse thinkers and viewpoints. Students concentrating in this area will also find relevant courses within our Moral Philosophy specialization. Representative course offerings include: Marxist Thought, Hermeneutics and Critical Theory, Economic Justice and Ethics, Social-Political Philosophy, and Philosophy of Human Action.
