The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a five-year program designed to equip students for academic careers focused on research and instruction in philosophy. Working closely with an advisor, you'll create a personalized curriculum. The program provides comprehensive exposure to philosophy's diverse fields while allowing specialization in your research interest. PhD candidates complete coursework across four core disciplines: philosophical history, logic, ELMS (epistemology, language philosophy, metaphysics, and science philosophy), and value theory. These foundational areas prepare graduates for post-doctoral research and teaching opportunities. All PhD students receive five years of financial support through teaching assistantships, instructor roles, and fellowship awards.
Anyone who has or will obtain a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or a comparable degree from an officially recognized college or university outside the U.S. may apply for graduate admission.
