The Philosophy Graduate Program has dual aims: first, to equip you with comprehensive knowledge across diverse philosophical disciplines through coursework, preparing you to become a versatile philosopher and skilled educator; second, to nurture your research capabilities through guided study, culminating in a doctoral dissertation. Our department specializes in analytic philosophy, with particular expertise in key fields including: philosophy of language and logic, philosophy of mind, ethics and political philosophy, epistemology, ancient philosophy, modern philosophy history, and metaphysics. Ultimately, UCSB graduates emerge with outstanding teaching abilities and a solid foundation in philosophy's fundamental domains.
The applicant for admission to the Ph.D. program in philosophy should have completed an undergraduate philosophy major, or a sufficiently close equivalent in the judgment of the graduate admissions committee.
