The philosophy graduate program prepares talented students for professional roles as philosophers and philosophy educators. It offers comprehensive foundational training, specialized research opportunities across key philosophical disciplines, and hands-on teaching experience with undergraduates. Each student follows a customized curriculum tailored to their academic background, interests, and career objectives. In the Standard Program, the initial two years typically involve coursework and independent study, with students taking their comprehensive exams by the fifth semester. After successfully completing these exams and demonstrating scholarly potential, candidates advance to dissertation work. The three Special Programs—Logic and Philosophy of Science, Classical Philosophy, and Political Philosophy—feature modified versions of the Standard Program requirements. While the program doesn't grant advanced standing, students with robust undergraduate preparation or prior graduate work in philosophy may accelerate through pre-exam requirements, potentially completing generals in two years or fewer.
