Earning a PhD necessitates completing at least 72 semester hours of graduate coursework before finalizing the dissertation. Admission to doctoral candidacy occurs through a faculty-wide vote in the Philosophy Department, typically following three semesters of full-time graduate study. The program is designed for students to fulfill all degree requirements within five years, with most recent graduates completing their studies between 4.5 and 5.5 years. Each fall, the PhD program enrolls four to six new students.

The graduate application process has two steps: 1) Submit an online application to the Graduate College and 2) Upload required supplemental documents through a secure portal. After you submit your application, you will receive email instructions on how to establish your HawkID and password in order to access your Admissions Profile on ISIS (Iowa Student Information Service), our online portal for students.
