Our community consists of graduate students and faculty members within Michigan State University's Philosophy Department, dedicated to advancing research, education, and public engagement in environmental philosophy and ethics. We explore diverse subjects including agricultural ethics, environmental justice, ecological values, food sovereignty, ecofeminism, environmental education, animal ethics, ecosystem restoration, climate justice, interdisciplinary approaches in environmental sciences, sustainability ethics, and environmental pragmatism.
The Philosophy Department provides two graduate degree options. Students can complete a Doctor of Philosophy in five years with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, while those with different academic backgrounds or a Master of Arts in Philosophy may have modified requirements. The master's program accommodates individuals with limited philosophical training or those seeking a terminal master's degree, with the option to later apply for the doctoral program. Both programs feature comprehensive distribution requirements to ensure foundational knowledge across philosophical disciplines. Specialization is available in three key areas where the department excels: healthcare philosophy, social and political thought (encompassing feminism, critical theory, African American philosophy, democratic theory, ethics, and development), and environmental philosophy. Students may also pursue traditional philosophical domains such as metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of logic and language, philosophy of science, ethics, historical philosophy, and continental philosophy.
