UTSA's Political Science program covers diverse topics including American government, global affairs, political theory, and legal studies. Students may opt for a Social Studies specialization, which can be declared post-admission in consultation with an academic advisor.
This curriculum examines power dynamics in social contexts, governing structures, and mechanisms designed to foster societal collaboration. Coursework addresses democratic systems, leadership approaches, NGO impacts on global affairs, public sentiment formation, constitutional jurisprudence, social media's evolving political role, and philosophical contributions from thinkers like Plato, Machiavelli, Hobbes, and Locke.
Through the College of Liberal and Fine Arts' Signature Experience initiative, which emphasizes practical application of knowledge, students are encouraged to participate in experiential learning opportunities. These include internships, independent research, international study programs, and research practicums. Political Science majors can count 3-6 credit hours of internship work toward their degree. Internships combine academic theory with professional practice under departmental supervision. The Political Science and Geography Department's internship coordinator manages placements, while faculty members provide oversight and evaluation. Additional details are available from the internship coordinator.
