The social relations and policy program examines public matters significantly influenced by interactions between different groups. This discipline takes a historical and cross-cultural approach, analyzing social dynamics both within the United States and globally across different time periods. The curriculum emphasizes the sociological, historical, and political aspects of intergroup connections, with particular focus on how elements like socioeconomic status, racial identity, cultural background, gender, religion, and national affiliation intersect. Through examining social relationships, the program develops critical thinking, research methods, analytical abilities, as well as skills in compassionate understanding, ethical evaluation, and practical solution development. This major is offered through James Madison College, Michigan State University's selective residential program specializing in global studies and public administration.
