This adaptable program was created to meet the requirements of aspiring school counselors, particularly those focusing on K-12 environments. Students can choose from online, in-person, or blended course formats to suit their individual situations. Renowned faculty prepare graduates, who regularly perform exceptionally well on state certification tests, to assist students with academic planning, career guidance, and emotional growth. Admission requires applicants to hold at least an undergraduate degree before applying to the Graduate School. Applicants must also pay a TEA technology fee (non-refundable, paid to the TEA as required by TAC 229.9.7).
Pursuant to the Texas Education Code TEC, 22.0835, candidates must undergo a criminal history background check prior to student teaching
Pursuant to the TEC, 22.083, candidates must undergo a criminal history background check prior to employment as an educator.
A candidate may be ineligible for issuance of a certificate on completion of the EPP if an individual has been convicted of an offense.
A person who is enrolled or planning to enroll in an educator preparation program or planning to take a certification examination may request a preliminary criminal history evaluation letter regarding the person's potential ineligibility for certification due to a conviction or deferred adjudication for a felony or misdemeanor offense.
Candidates must receive training in dyslexia, mental health/youth suicide, and instruction in digital learning with digital literacy evaluation followed by a prescribed digital learning curriculum based on the International Society for Technology Education (ISTE) standards. Trainings must be from a TEA approved provider.

If you did not attend high school in the United States and your most recent institution of learning was not located in an English-speaking country, UTEP requires you to provide evidence of English-language proficiency. Minimum score 550 on the paper-based (pBT) TOEFL. Some programs require 600 or better. Minimum score of 79 on the internet-based test (iBT), and minimum of 6.5 on IELTS.
