The PhD in Geological Sciences, established in 1974, stands as the University's inaugural doctoral program. This comprehensive program covers diverse advanced fields within Earth and Environmental Sciences, offering specialized research areas including Earth System Geochemistry, Geospatial Studies, Professional Geoscience Practice, Science Education, Solid Earth Dynamics, and Tectonic Processes, while remaining open to all geological science specializations. Our dynamic faculty of 20 tenured and tenure-track professors conducts globally relevant research on environmental and resource challenges, leveraging our region's exceptional geological features for both academic inquiry and instruction. Housed in the modern Geological Sciences Building spanning 90,000 square feet, the program provides ample space for offices, labs, and instructional areas. State-of-the-art departmental resources support doctoral research, featuring cutting-edge geochemical instrumentation (including MC-ICP-MS, various spectrometers, microanalytical tools), geophysical equipment (seismic monitors, magnetic field detectors, advanced surveying instruments), specialized geospatial technology, and robust computational infrastructure.
