The Department of Geosciences provides the chance to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in geosciences through its extensive program, which accommodates various research specialties. Students can choose between two doctoral tracks: Ph.D. in Geosciences or Ph.D. in Applied Geosciences. The core criterion for the Ph.D. is showcasing exceptional academic excellence and research capabilities within a geoscience discipline. Each Ph.D. committee requires a minimum of five qualified members, consisting of the primary advisor, at least one additional Geosciences faculty member, and one University of Michigan faculty member from outside the department. The committee may include additional members from Geosciences, other UM departments, or external institutions, pending graduate school approval. Only one committee member may hold emeritus or research faculty status within the department.
