Rice University's Earth Science program explores the makeup and architecture of our planet, along with the physical and chemical mechanisms that have shaped and continue to transform it across timescales spanning moments to eons. Our researchers employ diverse methodologies to observe, analyze, and measure geological phenomena and substances, enabling us to probe Earth's depths, anticipate and mitigate natural disasters like quakes, tidal waves, and volcanic activity, as well as discover and extract vital resources including aquifers, fossil fuels, and mineral deposits.
