The Department provides two doctoral degree options: a Ph.D. in Geosciences and a Ph.D. in Applied Geosciences. Earning a Ph.D. requires proving exceptional academic achievement and research capabilities within a Geoscience discipline. Each Ph.D. committee must consist of at least five qualified members, including the primary advisor, one additional Geosciences faculty member, and at least one University of Montana faculty member from outside the Geosciences Department. The committee may include additional members from Geosciences, other UM departments, or external institutions, pending graduate school approval. Only one committee member may hold emeritus or research faculty status within the Department. This committee oversees research evaluation, provides specialized instruction, administers comprehensive exams, and assesses the dissertation. Members should be chosen based on their relevant expertise. Doctoral candidates who do not form and maintain a committee within two years will face dismissal.
