The Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Earth Science is a degree program provided by Indiana University through its Department of Earth Sciences.

This doctoral curriculum equips graduates for careers in academia, research institutions, and leadership roles within environmental agencies at various governmental levels or private sector organizations. Upon completion, you'll possess the skills to evaluate intricate environmental systems and contribute meaningful strategies for balancing human needs with planetary processes.
Students focus their research in one of three specializations: water resources, geochemical cycles, or physical Earth systems. This specialization builds advanced technical knowledge for conducting impactful research and applying specialized methodologies to diverse challenges in applied geosciences. You're required to declare your chosen concentration area by the end of your second semester in the program, with course selection guided by your faculty advisor and dissertation committee.
Prospective students should have a B.S. or M.S. degree in the physical, biological, or health sciences, and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is expected. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is required.
English language requirements:
All non-native speakers of English must also submit proof of English proficiency unless the applicant has a Bachelor's degree or higher from the US or a predominantly English-speaking country.
