It also encompasses paleoclimatology, paleoceanography, paleontology, and paleobiology within the broader scope of biological and historical sciences. The Ph.D. represents the student's comprehensive understanding of challenges, methodologies, and knowledge across these diverse fields. It also recognizes the candidate's original contributions to specialized research through experimental, observational, or theoretical work. The program additionally grants an M.S. degree, acknowledging advanced scholarship beyond undergraduate studies. Prospective students should note that the program is primarily designed for those aiming to earn a Ph.D.

The Department of Geophysical Sciences was established in 1961 by merging the university's geology and meteorology departments. This unification aimed to foster interdisciplinary research and scholarship focused on Earth, its cosmic context, and its environmental and biological evolution.
