Students in Women's and Gender Studies examine a wide range of subjects concerning women, gender, and sexuality. They can showcase their research at the yearly Women's and Gender Studies conference and the Femme Frontera film exhibition. The program facilitates internships, community involvement, and international study opportunities. This interdisciplinary field enables both women and men to examine complex issues including gender dynamics, racial identity, and sexual orientation. While the formal Women's and Gender Studies Program began in 1981, UTEP has provided related courses since the 1970s.
UTEP's border location with Mexico enables specialized courses like La Chicana and Latin American Women's History, highlighting the significant yet frequently unrecognized roles of Latinas. These classes help students from both sides of the Rio Grande better comprehend their distinctive cultural environment. Additional specialized topics cover Queer studies, Middle Eastern studies, and religious studies.
Most Women's Studies courses are jointly offered with other UTEP departments like humanities, film studies, communication, and business, allowing students to tailor their minor through broad exploration or concentrated study. Distinguished UTEP faculty collaborate with Women's Studies to provide enriched perspectives. Graduates with this minor apply their knowledge across diverse sectors including social justice, non-profits, healthcare, business, and legal fields.
