The Edith ODonnell Institute of Art History's master's program offers students an immersive exploration of global art history through direct interaction with artworks from Dallas and Fort Worth collections. Participants benefit from exclusive access to both public and private collections, exceptional research materials, and the groundbreaking interdisciplinary work of ODonnell Institute faculty, enabling them to examine diverse artistic materials across time periods, cultures, and mediums while developing expertise in art historical theory, historiography, and professional methodologies.
This intensive two-year program challenges highly driven students, equipping them for prestigious doctoral programs or professional roles in the arts. The academic structure includes two foundational courses (Art Historical Practices and Materials/Techniques History), five specialized seminars focusing on faculty research specialties, plus a hands-on practicum where students develop original projects—whether scholarly papers, curated exhibitions, artist collaborations, conservation efforts, or archival investigations. These practicum opportunities often involve partnerships with renowned institutions like the Dallas Museum of Art, Crow Collection of Asian Art, Nasher Sculpture Center, and The Warehouse.
The minimum requirement for admission to any master's degree program at UT Dallas is an earned UT Dallas baccalaureate degree or its equivalent with a grade average of B or better in upper-division (junior and senior level) work in the student's major field and related fields.
